Nigeria's Military Claims 35 Jihadists Killed in Air Strikes

In a concerted effort, Nigeria's military has conducted air strikes eliminating 35 jihadists near the Cameroonian border.

The Nigerian military has reported a significant victory against jihadist groups, stating that recent air strikes have resulted in the deaths of 35 jihadists as they attempted to launch attacks on ground troops. The strikes took place in four targeted areas, showcasing the ongoing struggle Nigeria faces in combating a multitude of violent conflicts, including an enduring battle against militant groups for over a decade. Recently, various Nigerian leaders expressed concerns over the escalating violence, highlighting a report by Amnesty International that documented over 10,000 deaths since President Bola Tinubu assumed office. They called for the establishment of a Presidential Task Force to address the alarming rise of factions like Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (Iswap) in northeastern Nigeria. Despite the military's claim of killing nearly 600 militants this year, some skepticism remains regarding the accuracy of these figures. In addition, the UK’s Institute for Security Studies noted a rising trend in jihadist attacks utilizing modified drones to target army installations. With the conflict claiming over 35,000 lives and displacing two million, the situation continues to be dire, further complicated by recent arms sales from the US to Nigeria aimed at enhancing security efforts against these threats.
