In brief

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza escalates as Israel neglects a US mandate to increase aid amid warnings of famine.

In a troubling development for Gaza, Israel has reportedly failed to comply with a U.S. ultimatum requiring an increase in daily aid deliveries to the beleaguered territory. According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), this failure places both humanitarian efforts and American military assistance in jeopardy. Last month, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a letter to Israeli officials stating they had 30 days to allow a minimum of 350 aid trucks to enter Gaza daily. That deadline, which expired on November 12, passed without Israel meeting the requirements laid out. The UN has indicated that aid entering Gaza is currently at its lowest level in over a year, raising alarms about a potential famine, particularly in northern Gaza.Louise Wateridge, Senior Emergency Coordinator for UNRWA, expressed grave concerns about the situation, confirming to the BBC that the current aid is insufficient. “People are starving in some areas. They are very hungry. They are fighting over bags of flour," she stated, painting a dire picture of the humanitarian crisis that has led many families to rely on soup kitchens for survival. Despite the increase in aid trucks reported by Israel, critics assert that it has not come close to meeting the demands set by the U.S. Israel claims to have supplemented efforts by reopening multiple crossings, including Kissufim, to facilitate aid entry. However, the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) shows a striking contrast, revealing an average of only 40 trucks entering the region daily over the past month. Israel disputes these figures, asserting that equipment and supplies are waiting on its side of the border for aid agencies to pick up. Nonetheless, OCHA and other aid organizations emphasize that the Israeli military’s operations hamper their ability to deliver aid safely. With the ongoing crisis evolving, the U.S. appears hesitant to impose stringent measures against Israel, despite the high casualties reported. As the world watches for signs of resolution, the plight of Gaza's inhabitants remains critical amid an evident humanitarian crisis.
