In brief
Ilya Lichtenstein, the hacker behind one of the largest Bitcoin thefts in history, was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in laundering nearly 120,000 stolen Bitcoins from the Bitfinex exchange.
Lichtenstein, who admitted guilt last year, participated in the theft which originally garnered around $70 million, but had surged to over $4.5 billion by the time he was apprehended. The Department of Justice announced that the $3.6 billion in recovered assets from the case marked a historic financial seizure. Lichtenstein expressed regret and hopes to redirect his skills toward combating cybercrime upon completing his sentence. His wife, Heather Morgan, also implicated in the scheme, is scheduled for sentencing soon. Together, they employed an array of sophisticated laundering techniques, including the use of fictitious identities and multiple cryptocurrency exchanges. Morgan even gained notoriety online under the alias Razzlekhan through her hip-hop music, despite their attempts to evade justice. The court has made it clear that cybercriminals will face serious repercussions for their actions.
