Fred Grandy, an American artist from Oregon, recently traveled to Kyiv as a volunteer, aiming to assist in the recovery efforts from ongoing Russian assaults. Upset by the perceived withdrawal of U.S. support for Ukraine, he felt compelled to make a difference. Family members recounted his determination to help clean up the devastation left by the conflict, cherishing the time he spent in Ukraine.

Tragically, on June 19, Grandy became one of 28 victims in a large-scale drone and missile strike that targeted various neighborhoods in Kyiv. The multi-hour assault resulted in extensive damage, particularly to a nine-story residential building. Emergency services are still working to recover bodies from the wreckage, highlighting the extensive human toll of the attack.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the strikes were successful in hitting designated targets, despite consistent denials of civilian casualties. Since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, the United Nations estimates that over 13,300 Ukrainian civilians have been killed, though many believe the true toll is much higher. Grandy's death marks a rare instance of an American civilian being killed in Kyiv during these air raids, shedding light on the escalating dangers facing even foreign volunteers in the conflict zone.
