In brief
In a time racked with uncertainty, the visit aims to reinforce U.S. commitments while exploring resources allocation.
By Maria Varenikova Reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine Feb. 12, 2025, 7:40 a.m. ET In a significant diplomatic move, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is slated to visit Ukraine, following the recent release of an American prisoner by Russia. This trip represents a notable first for the Trump administration since the president's reelection amid ongoing global tensions. The visit comes at a time of heightened apprehension in Kyiv and among American allies regarding the continuation of U.S. backing for Ukraine's wartime efforts now that President Trump is back in the White House. Under Trump's leadership, officials have been exploring arrangements to secure U.S. rights to Ukraine's natural resources, such as rare earth minerals, as a contingency for ongoing American support. In a post on Truth Social, President Trump emphasized the urgency of resolving the conflict by stating, "this war must and will end soon — too much death and destruction." He highlighted the enormous financial investments the U.S. has made in support of Ukraine, pinpointing that there has been "too little to show" for that expenditure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed optimism regarding Bessent's visit, stating, "We are already prepared for meetings with representatives of the United States — negotiations will begin soon." This underscores the importance both nations place on enhancing diplomatic relations and addressing the ongoing conflict in the region.
