In brief

Afghan authorities intercepted a drug smuggling operation in Takhar province, seizing more than 180 kg of opium and hashish and arresting four traffickers. A parallel raid in Herat saw police seize 32 kg of methamphetamine and detain two suspects.

On Saturday, Afghan counter‑narcotics police in the northern province of Takhar seized more than 180 kg of opium and hashish and arrested four suspected traffickers, provincial police spokesman Naqibullah Masroor announced on Sunday. The seized contraband comprised 143 kg of opium and 40 kg of hashish, which had been hidden in compartments of a standard passenger vehicle in Taluqan, the capital of Takhar province.

The police report said the four suspects were transporting the drugs to an unknown destination when their vehicle was intercepted by authorities on the outskirts of Taluqan. All four were taken into custody without any reported incident, police said.

In a parallel operation carried out the preceding Friday in the western Afghan province of Herat, counter‑narcotics officers confiscated 32 kg of methamphetamine and detained two suspects. The seizure was made at a separate location in Herat, but police did not disclose additional details about the suspects or the intended distribution network.

Naqibullah Masroor explained that the vehicle in Takhar was inspected following a tip that had warned police of an ongoing smuggling effort. He added that the concealment measures the suspects used did not prevent the officers from discovering the large quantities of narcotics.

Both incidents illustrate the ongoing efforts by Afghan authorities to curb drug trafficking amidst the nation’s broader struggle with narcotics production and distribution. Although the police did not confirm whether the seized drugs would have reached international markets, they indicated that the operations would be part of a wider strategy to disrupt smuggling routes.

The takings in Takhar represent one of the largest drug seizures in the region this year, according to Masroor. He also noted that the two Herat suspects were being investigated further to identify possible links to the wider trafficking network operating across the country’s borders.

No injuries or injuries were reported in either operation, and vehicles involved were returned to their owners after the drugs and suspects were removed, the spokesman said. Police reiterated that the authorities would continue to monitor transport routes for suspicious activity.

With these interdictions, Afghan police continue to highlight their commitment to cracking down on drug trafficking in order to protect communities from the destructive effects of narcotics and to combat the economic incentives that drive the country's drug trade.
