In brief

In the wake of Pope Francis' passing, Romans unite at St. John Lateran, recalling his messages of peace and hope as they mourn their shepherd's loss.

As the world learned of Pope Francis' passing on April 21, 2025, the heart of Rome, St. John Lateran, became a sanctuary for the grieving faithful. The church, the official seat of the Bishop of Rome, attracted numerous mourners eager to pay their respects to the pope who had been a guiding light to over a billion Catholics worldwide."After we heard the heartbreaking news, we knew we had to come here," said Mauro Cappelli, as he stood outside the majestic basilica with his family. Located just outside Vatican City and surrounded by one of Rome's most vibrant neighborhoods, St. John Lateran quickly became a focal point for those wanting to honor their spiritual leader.Even under the bright sky, the mood was somber as visitors flowed into the basilica, many carrying their grief visibly. Some, tourists among them, engaged in the sacred ritual of capturing memories at the basilica's holy door, recently opened for the Jubilee event.Inside, echoes of Francis' life rippled through conversations among attendees. "It was expected, yet it jolted us," expressed Pasquale Di Tardo, who had traveled from Bari for the Easter holiday. Alongside him, his wife Rosa Rita Porro chimed in, noting how they've observed Francis’ health progressively decline. “It’s a loss,” she said, highlighting the deep emotional connection many felt.Reflecting on their bonds with Francis, local Roman Maria Puma sighed, “I’m still trying to digest this news.” Although she had sometimes disagreed with the pope's views, today marked a moment for unity in their sorrow. “He was a pillar of peace,” added Maria Antonini, Cappelli’s wife. Many echoed her sentiments, celebrating Francis' unwavering advocacy for social justice amidst a world often dominated by division. As the mourners departed, a collective hope lingered that Francis’ legacy could ignite a path toward a more compassionate future for humanity. For many, the pope's messages had not just been spiritual guidance, but rallying cries for kindness and equality, inspiring dreams of a better world.
