Witness Gets Combative in Tupac Murder Trial
James "Mob" James, a former rival gang member, threw a hostile challenge to the defense during the second day of Duane "Keffe D" Davis’s murder trial. When the prosecutor demanded he name those responsible for killing rapper Tupac Shakur, James accused the court of forcing him to testify under threat of contempt.
The witness’s refusal to answer was met with a up‑balled voice and a firm declaration that he wouldn’t "send him to prison," even as he was not present when the shooting occurred. James, who once worked at Death Row Records, also noted that the shooting was part of a gang war that escalated after a fight involving Davis’ nephew Orlando Anderson.
Shakur was shot in a drive‑by shooting outside a Las Vegas street after a Mike Tyson boxing match in 1996. Despite six days later dying in the hospital, the case had remained cold until former gang leader Davis published a memoir alleging his role in the attack.
The trial is expected to proceed into Wednesday, with additional testimony from Reggie Wright Jr., former Death Row Records manager and former police officer. The prosecution still points to Davis, while his defense argues the evidence may implicate Wright.
