In brief
Authorities in Wisconsin are attempting to revoke Morgan Geyser's conditional release after she escaped from a group home and was later found in Illinois. Geyser, who was convicted in the infamous 2014 Slender Man stabbing case, had been living in a group home since her release from a mental institution earlier this year. This legal action raises questions about her future and the conditions under which she was released.
Wisconsin authorities are seeking to revoke the conditional release of Morgan Geyser, who was involved in the near-fatal stabbing of her sixth grade classmate in 2014 as part of a plan to impress the fictional horror character, Slender Man. Geyser recently escaped from a group home and was apprehended outside of Chicago, approximately 170 miles from the facility.
A judge in Waukesha County has agreed to seal the petition filed by the Department of Corrections, which seeks Geyser's return to a state mental institution. Earlier this year, Geyser was approved for conditional release to a group home after spending most of the last eight years in a mental health facility.
Her escape, which took place over the weekend, involved cutting off her GPS monitoring bracelet and traveling with a 43-year-old companion. Once found, Geyser did not contest her extradition back to Wisconsin and is currently being held in the Waukesha County jail.
The judge is set to hold a motion hearing on December 22 to discuss the state's request to revoke her release. If her conditional release is revoked, Geyser could face new charges related to the escape and potentially return to the mental institution where she spent a significant amount of time.
Geyser's companion has since been charged with trespassing and obstruction but has not been accused of aiding in Geyser's escape. Reports indicate that the two became friends at church and Geyser acted out of fear that the group home would no longer allow them to see each other.
The case reignited public interest due to its violent history; Geyser, alongside her friend Anissa Weier, lured classmate Payton Leutner to a park and attacked her in hopes of becoming followers of Slender Man, who both believed would harm their families if they did not carry out the violent act. The incident raised serious concerns about mental health and the influence of online fiction on young individuals.
