PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Police renewed their search Monday for the gunman who killed two Brown University students and wounded nine others, a day after they released a person of interest after determining the evidence pointed “in a different direction.”

Authorities announced the man’s release at a news conference late Sunday, marking a setback in the investigation into Saturday’s attack on the Ivy League school’s campus.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley assured the community that while anxiety is natural, no credible threats have been identified since the incident.

No current suspect in deadly shooting

Following the release of the person of interest, law enforcement is intensifying their search for surveillance footage and other evidence that could identify the shooter.

“We have a murderer out there,” stated Attorney General Peter Neronha.

On Sunday morning, a man was taken into custody at a Hampton Inn some distance from Providence, but after further investigation, authorities dropped him as a suspect.

“I’ve been around long enough to know that sometimes you head in one direction and then you have to regroup,” Neronha added, as the investigation pivots to seek new leads.

Mayor Smiley described the potential suspect as being captured in a brief video clip walking away from the scene. Currently, there is no evidence suggesting there are multiple perpetrators involved.

Despite a heightened police presence around the university, officials do not recommend another shelter-in-place order, although the campus is still under scrutiny.
