TUKWILA, Wash. — In an urgent response to flood risks, authorities issued an evacuation order early Tuesday for residents living near a breached levee in Tukwila, Washington. This development came shortly after an evacuation alert was lifted for another levee break within the same county.
The city police urged residents near the White River to 'Go Now!' following a flash flood warning from the National Weather Service. With the region already grappling with the effects of multiple days of heavy rain, the situation has created significant flooding, necessitating the evacuation of tens of thousands across western Washington.
On Monday, emergency crews worked to stabilize the Desimone levee next to the Green River, which had experienced a partial failure. An evacuation order was implemented for parts of three nearby suburbs, aimed at keeping approximately 1,100 homes and businesses east of the Green River safe. Brendan McCluskey, the emergency management director for King County, confirmed that residents were allowed to return home after earlier evacuation alerts were rescinded, with no reports of injuries.
However, authorities from both Renton and Tukwila indicated that the flooding remained localized to industrial areas, ensuring the safety of residential neighborhoods until the current flood threat is under control.
