Uganda Unveils Statue of Yonatan Netanyahu at Entebbe
In Entebbe yesterday Uganda unveiled a bronze statue of Yonatan Netanyahu, brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was killed in the 1976 Entebbe raid.
The monument stands outside the old terminal of the international airport where the raid happened.
Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the army chief, spoke in front of the statue about courage and self‑less service, calling the mission one of the most significant episodes in modern history.
He added that the statue is a symbol of the remarkable journey that has brought Uganda and Israel closer, emphasizing a partnership built on mutual trust.
The Entebbe raid sought to rescue more than 100 hostages held by hijackers who had diverted a flight from Tel Aviv to Uganda’s airport.
During the rescue, Yonatan Netanyahu was the only Israeli soldier killed, while several hostages and Ugandan soldiers also lost their lives.
The event remains a painful chapter for Uganda, but it also deepened the ties between the two countries.
Today the statue stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made and the shared history that both nations continue to honour.
