Attorneys from the Justice Department have asked the White House to place President Donald Trump’s name back on the Kennedy Center after a court order forced its removal in June.
Lawyers argued that an order blocking the Board from properly recognising President Trump “will cause donors to flee, financial contributions to dry up, and structural rehabilitation to stop.”
The Kennedy Center, a storied performing‑arts venue in Washington, has been one of several historic sites the current administration seeks to renovate since returning to the White House in 2025.
If the renovations are stalled, the lawyers claim the building will deteriorate into an unsafe, decrepit structure required to be taken down. They said that after demolition, a new assessment could lead to a large outdoor amphitheatre overlooking the Potomac River.
The threat follows a recent Board vote to add Trump’s name back to the building’s façade and to close the venue for a two‑year renovation period. A judge earlier ruled that the name could not be added without congressional approval, ordering the removal of the name in June.
Trump’s administration has pursued similar projects elsewhere, including renovating the National Mall’s reflecting pool, installing a 250‑foot victory arch, demolishing the White House East Wing for a ballroom, and adding his name to federal institutions such as the US Institute of Peace.
