In brief

A 39‑year‑old man named Kevin T was arrested after a vehicle‑borne shooting in Trappes and La Verrière that killed a French‑Congolese martial artist and left several others wounded. French anti‑terrorism officials say he will undergo psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is fit for interrogation. President Emmanuel Macron has labelled the attack a “racist terrorist assault”, while some jurists question whether the move to a psychiatric ward is rare and possibly politically motivated. Le Monde reports that a Bible, a Quran and a copy of Mein Kampf were found at his home, and that drugs were detected in his bloodstream. The incident has prompted local officials to reassure the public and highlighted the blurred line between criminality and ideological extremism.

A 39‑year‑old man known as Kevin T was arrested in Trappes, a suburb of Paris, after firing a car‑mounted shotgun that killed a 26‑year‑old French‑Congolese martial artist and wounded five other people, many of whom were of migrant origin. French anti‑terrorism officials chief the attack as a “racist terrorist assault”, emphasizing that the targets were chosen for their skin colour or religion.

The National Anti‑Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) has moved the suspect into a psychiatric observation unit, citing a guidance from a mental‑health expert. It will last roughly 48 hours and will decide whether he should remain in police custody for interrogation.

PNAT notes that the suspect tested positive for cannabis and cocaine, and that his home yielded a Bible, a Quran and a copy of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf, sources close to the investigation reported. The suspect had prior convictions that had been automatically expunged, and he was not known to intelligence services before the attack.

Representatives of the victim’s family, led by Pengo Bossio Wangi’s lawyer, described the psychiatric move as “very rare” and suggested it aimed to portray the suspect as reckless rather than the product of ideological motives.

Three injured victims remain in serious condition, including a 12‑year‑old girl who was later reported to be stabilising. The mayor of La Verrière, Nicolas Dainville, confirmed the girl’s improving condition. Local officials are monitoring the situation closely while authorities process evidence and the suspect’s mental state.
