McEwen, TN (AP) — Authorities have confirmed that 16 people lost their lives in a devastating explosion at an explosives manufacturing plant last week. Investigators have begun a comprehensive search for evidence that may span across several miles, aiming to uncover the details surrounding the blast.

During a recent press conference, Sheriff Chris Davis acknowledged the tight-knit community where most residents are interconnected by family ties, stressing the profound impact of the tragedy.

The explosion occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems, a prominent employer specializing in military explosives. Community members gathered for Sunday services, reflecting on their grief and mourning the passing of beloved local figures, including the pastor of The Log Church, Trent Stewart.

Stewart's fiancée, Katy Stover, shared on social media about the overwhelming turnout at the church, emphasizing how Stewart would have appreciated the support during such a tragic time.

Responses have emerged to support families of the victims, with fundraisers initiated for those who perished, including Reyna Gillahan, whose daughter is aiming to secure their family home.

At least a mile around the area is hazardous, as authorities continue to identify remains and clear dangers related to the site. Matthew Belew, acting special agent in charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, indicated the complexity of the investigation, likening it to putting together a giant puzzle.

The plant spans 1,300 acres in a heavily wooded region and features various production buildings alongside a laboratory. The handling and manufacturing of explosives require a robust emphasis on safety—something Accurate Energetic Systems prides itself on.

As the social and economic fabric of the McEwen area begins to heal, the emphasis remains on supporting the victims’ families and seeking answers regarding the cause of this tragic event.
