At least 13 people have been killed in an Israeli strike near a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon, as reported by the country's health ministry.
The Israeli military asserted that it targeted members of the Palestinian armed group Hamas operating in a training compound... in the Ein el-Hilweh area. However, no evidence was presented to support this claim, and Hamas has not issued a response.
This incident is part of a pattern of Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, which have taken place despite a recent ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group. While most of these strikes have focused on Hezbollah, they have also included operations against Hamas.
In addition to the fatalities, Lebanon’s health ministry reported at least four individuals were injured in the attack. Emergency workers were seen responding at the entrance of the Ein el-Hilweh camp, which is the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon. Footage online captured ambulances navigating the narrow streets of the camp, with thick plumes of smoke visible from the strike's location.
Initial reports indicate that the attack hit an area outside a mosque that tends to be crowded at night. Various Palestinian factions are known to have a significant presence in the camp.
According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the operation was conducted with precautions to mitigate civilian harm, utilizing precision munitions and enhanced aerial surveillance.
The escalating conflict follows Hamas's attack on southern Israel from Gaza on October 7, 2023, resulting in around 1,200 fatalities, with subsequent Israeli military operations claiming the lives of over 69,169 Palestinians in Gaza, as reported by the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.
The situation has further deteriorated due to Hezbollah’s rocket fire on Israeli positions soon after the events of October 7, justified by the group as solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
The ongoing conflict, which began in October 2024, has led to extensive violence. Lebanese officials estimate that Israeli attacks have resulted in approximately 4,000 deaths in Lebanon, largely among civilians, and displaced over 1.2 million residents. In contrast, Israeli authorities report 80 soldiers and 47 civilians lost their lives during the escalation.
