EL PASO, Texas — A Nicaraguan immigrant named Victor Manuel Diaz has been found dead at a Texas immigration detention facility, raising alarms about the treatment of detainees. Reports indicate that Diaz may have taken his own life while held in a tent complex at Fort Bliss, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Diaz, who was aged 36, was brought into custody as part of a federal sweep on immigration enforcement in Minnesota on January 6. His journey began when he entered the U.S. earlier this year, facing legal challenges that ultimately led to his final removal order just days before his death.

The facility where Diaz was detained was not only scrutinized for Diaz's death; it also experienced a recent incident where another detainee, Geraldo Lunas Campos, died under questionable circumstances. Reports suggest Lunas Campos was being physically subdued by staff when he became unresponsive, with preliminary findings indicating an asphyxia-related death likely categorized as a homicide.

A detainee present during the incident claimed that several guards were restraining Lunas Campos, one reportedly placing an arm around his neck. This revelation has intensified calls for increased scrutiny regarding protocols in handling at-risk detainees.

ICE has confirmed that they are investigating both cases and typically provides updates to Congress regarding such incidents. These tragic events underscore a broader issue related to the mental health support for individuals in detention and highlight the urgent need for enhanced care and policies to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
