LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A tragic accident occurred at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday as a UPS cargo plane crashed, killing at least seven individuals and injuring many others. The plane, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 model, was attempting to take off for Honolulu when its left wing caught fire at approximately 5:15 p.m. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has indicated that 11 individuals have suffered significant injuries as a result of this devastating incident.
Initial reports suggest that four victims were not aboard the aircraft, highlighting the extensive impact of the crash. Videos from the scene captured harrowing moments as flames erupted from the plane’s left wing before it barely lifted off the ground, subsequently crashing into a nearby area and creating a massive fireball. Witnesses described the terrifying sights, including explosions that lit up the evening sky and left a trail of destruction.
A Trail of Destruction
The Louisville Fire Department Chief, Brian O’Neill, reported that the fire spanned almost an entire city block, prompting the immediate shutdown of the airport, which may not resume operations until the following morning. Local residents shared footage showing the flames and smoke from the ground, while parts of a neighboring building's roof were also damaged during the incident.
UPS Responds
As the investigation unfolds, UPS has confirmed that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the inquiry. In a statement, the company expressed its condolences and confirmed the suspension of package sorting operations at its largest hub, where it typically manages over 400,000 packages per hour and handles more than 300 daily flights.
UPS insisted that there were no hazardous materials on the flight, but it is still unclear what may have led to the catastrophic failure of the aircraft. Aviation expert Pablo Rojas remarked on the gravity of the situation, stating that the amount of fuel onboard can turn an aircraft into a significant risk during a blaze, with challenges in handling such emergencies during takeoff. The incident raises critical questions about safety protocols and the overall investigation will hopefully provide more insight into these horrific events.
