ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Director and Emmy Award-winning actor Timothy Busfield turned himself to authorities on Tuesday to face child sex abuse charges in New Mexico. His apprehension follows a warrant issued by authorities on January 9, citing two counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor and one count of child abuse. The charges stem from allegations that Busfield inappropriately touched a young boy on the set of the TV series 'The Cleaning Lady' that he was directing.
The booking was confirmed by Gilbert Gallegos, spokesperson for the Albuquerque police department.
A criminal complaint states that one of the boys reported being around 7 years old when Busfield allegedly inappropriately touched him multiple times over his clothing. Another incident reportedly occurred when the boy was 8. The child expressed fear of speaking out due to Busfield's position as director, fearing he might get upset.
In additional claims, the twin brother of the boy indicated that he also experienced inappropriate touching by Busfield but did not disclose the specifics for fear of repercussions.
Busfield reportedly denied the allegations during previous questioning, suggesting the boys’ mother could be acting out of retribution for their being replaced on the series. He described the set as a playful place, implying any interaction might have been innocent.
Despite the allegations, Busfield's attorney and agent have not responded to requests for comment.
The mother of the twins reported the incidents to Child Protective Services, indicating that the reported abuse happened between November 2022 and Spring 2024. The investigation began in November 2024 after a doctor contacted authorities following a visit from the family, which he recommended based on his observations.
It was noted that one of the boys has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety, mentioning nightmares related to the alleged abuse.
'The Cleaning Lady' aired for four seasons on Fox, finishing in 2025, produced by Warner Bros. The company conducted its own investigation but could not substantiate the claims.
Busfield, who is married to actress Melissa Gilbert, is recognized for his performances in 'The West Wing', 'Field of Dreams', and 'Thirtysomething', which earned him an Emmy award for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series in 1991.
