In brief

Southern Spain faces severe weather events causing extensive damage, prompting warnings from meteorologists as long-term rainfall is anticipated.

On the night of October 28, 2024, southern Spain experienced an unprecedented deluge, leaving farmers, residents, and emergency services grappling with the consequences of one of the most destructive rainfalls of the year. Manuel Yerai, a farmer in the agricultural heartland of El Ejido, described the scene on his farm as “devastating,” revealing that tennis ball-sized hail had torn through his greenhouse coverings, destroying his pepper crops. “My greenhouses look like they had been shot at,” Yerai conveyed in a phone call. The effects of the storm were felt across numerous regions including Valencia, Murcia, and Malaga, where residents reported extensive flooding and debris. In the wake of the storm, the landscape was littered with dead birds and damaged vehicles, while many were left without power or access to roads.According to Spain’s meteorological agency, localized areas recorded rainfall totals between 150 and 200 liters per square meter—equating to over a month’s worth of water in just a single day. In Andalusia, the precipitation level reached four times that typically witnessed in October.Meteorologists warned that the exceptional rainfall posed “extreme danger” to the population. Rubén del Campo, a spokesperson for the meteorological agency, advised residents to refrain from unnecessary travel. “These are huge amounts of rainfall,” he cautioned, emphasizing the dire circumstances faced by those in the affected areas. As rescue operations unfold, with helicopters deployed to assist stranded individuals, meteorologists predict relentless rain may persist through the coming days, keeping communities on high alert and raising concerns about further flooding and damage. The region now faces the daunting task of recovering from this natural disaster, while hopes remain for the rain to subside soon.
