ALAMEDA, Calif. — In a dramatic incident late Thursday, law enforcement officers fired shots at a vehicle that attempted to back into a U.S. Coast Guard base, coinciding with ongoing protests against federal immigration efforts in the San Francisco Bay Area. The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. at the base in Alameda, California, according to a statement from the Coast Guard on X.

Officials reported that the vehicle, described as a U-Haul truck, ignored multiple verbal commands to stop from Coast Guard personnel and continued to reverse toward the base, prompting officers to take necessary action to protect themselves. Fortunately, the vehicle fled the scene without injuring any Coast Guard members.

Video footage from the site captured the chaotic moments as protesters gathered during the day, voicing their discontent towards federal immigration policies with signs reading Protect our neighbors and No ICE or troops in the Bay. Earlier in the day, President Trump announced he was canceling plans for a federal surge into the city after discussions with local leaders who emphasized locally-managed crime reduction efforts.

The event has raised questions about safety and communication between local and federal authorities, especially in light of the protests that took place earlier in the day against U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents deployed nearby.

As investigations proceed, Coast Guard Island, a 67-acre federally owned site, remains a contentious focal point in the ongoing immigration debate in the region. With heightened attention from both local officials and the federal government, the events of Thursday night in Alameda have further complicated the dialogue surrounding immigration enforcement and public safety.
