Record-Breaking Oscar Nominations for Vampire Film 'Sinners'
The vampire horror film 'Sinners' has broken the record for the most Oscar nominations received by a single film, after being nominated for 16 of Hollywood's most coveted honors.
The film surpassed the previous record of 14 nominations and emerged ahead of its nearest rival this year, 'One Battle After Another', starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which is up for 13 awards.
'Sinners' contenders include its star Michael B. Jordan and his British co-stars Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo. Other stars vying for trophies include Timothee Chalamet, hoping for a win after two previous nominations, and Irish actress Jessie Buckley, the frontrunner for best actress for Hamnet.
However, there was no recognition for her co-star Paul Mescal from 'Hamnet', while 'Wicked: For Good' and its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande missed out entirely.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Hollywood on March 15.
The Leading Films:
- Sinners - 16
- One Battle After Another - 13
- Marty Supreme - 9
- Frankenstein - 9
- Sentimental Value - 9
- Hamnet - 8
'Sinners' has exceeded expectations, bucking the trend typically associated with horror films at award ceremonies. The film stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers returning to Mississippi in the 1930s to open a juke joint besieged by vampires.
With nominations including best actor for Jordan, best supporting actress for Mosaku, and best director for Ryan Coogler, this film has captured significant attention.
BBC Radio 1 film critic Ali Plumb remarked on the significance of 'Sinners' garnering acclaim beyond the horror genre. He noted, It's so much more than just horror... it's a blend of revenge thriller and a musical journey through America's race issues.
This year's record nominations have been boosted by the addition of a new award, for best casting, reflecting the evolving nature of Oscars categories.
Though 'One Battle After Another', featuring DiCaprio, offers a take on the current political climate, it remains to be seen if it can compete against 'Sinners' for the top honors during the awards.
