On 13 August, the Israeli army entered Qusra, a village under heavy occupation in the West Bank, after settlers cut electricity and water to three Palestinian homes, effectively barricading the residents for days.
The settlers’ blockade prompted the IDF to conduct an operation that forced about a dozen families to evacuate their households. The evacuated residents were forced to move into a third house that had remained untouched. Subsequent to the evacuation, settlers reportedly reconvened, seizing lopsided control over the vacated houses. Israeli officials claim the operation was aimed at protecting the Palestinians, while the settlers’ actions were labelled “deplorable” and “unacceptable” by an IDF spokesperson.
Among the families affected was Qaher Odeh, who recounted seeing more than twenty soldiers enter his home, breaking doors and shouting “open the door!” He described a situation of prolonged intimidation and said that soldiers had demolished property, forcing the family back to a home that had been turned upside down.
The incident is part of a pattern of settler violence in the West Bank. The United Nations reports that over 3,800 Palestinians have been displaced in 2026 because of settler aggression, demolitions and forced evictions, a figure that includes almost a quarter of all those displaced as children. In response, the UN has raised serious concerns about the state’s security council’s inaction.
The Qusra case underscores the heightened tensions and the escalating contest over land. The West Bank remains a battleground for both humanitarian and political stakes, with international law unilaterally recognizing settlements as illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
