The Trump administration is initiating a new immigration sweep dubbed 'Operation Charlotte’s Web' in Charlotte, North Carolina, the state's largest city. The operation has come under fire from various quarters, particularly from Martha White, the granddaughter of E.B. White, the author of the iconic children’s book 'Charlotte’s Web.'
Martha White expressed her disapproval of the immigration sweeps, which she believes contradict the essence of her grandfather's teachings. 'He believed in the rule of law and due process,' she stated. 'Certainly, he didn’t support aggressive raids conducted by masked individuals in unmarked vehicles.' In the classic tale, the spider, who is a central character, fights for the freedom of a pig named Wilbur, symbolizing compassion and advocacy.
The Trump administration has been known to employ catchy titles for its mass deportation efforts, exemplified by facilities like 'Alligator Alcatraz' in Florida and 'Speedway Slammer' in Indiana. In Charlotte, Gregory Bovino, a Border Patrol official and a key individual behind previous operations in Los Angeles and Chicago, quoted E.B. White on social media, reinforcing the administration’s controversial positioning.
