U.S. immigration agents have arrested more than 130 people across Charlotte, North Carolina during the first days of the latest enforcement blitz.
The immigration sweep that started over the weekend comes on the heels of similar operations in Los Angeles and Chicago.
This initiative is part of Republican President Donald Trump’s efforts for mass deportation, where military and immigration agents are being deployed in areas governed by Democrats.
Why Charlotte?
The Department of Homeland Security has zeroed in on North Carolina’s biggest city due to local sanctuary policies that limit cooperation between local authorities and immigration agents. Charlotte currently has a Democratic mayor, and its police department does not assist with immigration enforcement, nor will the county jail hold immigration detainees for federal agents.
Officials from the Trump administration have cited a recent fatal stabbing of a Ukrainian refugee in Charlotte to justify their actions, claiming that Democratic-led cities are failing to ensure public safety.
In contrast, local leaders believe such measures are unwarranted, pointing towards declining crime rates.
Impact on the Community
Charlotte, alongside its suburbs in Mecklenburg County, continues to experience rapid growth, largely due to international migration. With a population nearing 950,000, about 150,000 are foreign-born, predominantly from Latin America.
As of now, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has reported that over 130 individuals have been arrested in the Charlotte sweep, many with criminal backgrounds, including gang affiliations and theft.
Local advocacy organizations have mobilized, preparing volunteers to recognize ICE agents and inform immigrants of their rights. One business owner even temporarily closed his store due to perceived targeting of his patrons by immigration officers.
Political Reactions
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein condemned the operations, asserting they foster fear and division in communities, claiming that federal agents are racially profiling pedestrians and patrons. Meanwhile, Mecklenburg County’s Republican Party chair, Kyle Kirby, publicly endorses the enforcement, emphasizing the need for law and order.
