OpenAI Researchers Claim They Were Fired for Raising Safety Concerns
Three former OpenAI researchers insist their dismissal was a result of prioritizing safety over corporate interests. The claims were made in an open letter posted on X, co‑authored by former OpenAI alignment staff Mikita Balesni, Tomek Korbak and Jasmine Wang.
OpenAI’s spokesperson confirmed the company investigated alleged mishandling of sensitive information. In a statement, research leaders said the decision was not tied to the researchers’ safety concerns but to a breach of trust that violated company procedures.
The three former employees argue that the firings have created a climate of fear, stifling discussion around AI alignment and safe deployment. Korbak highlighted concerns about losing the ability to monitor AI agents’ thoughts, a key tool for detecting harmful behaviour.
OpenAI said it will finalize contracts with third‑party safety assessors in the coming weeks. The debate underscores the broader challenge of aligning advanced AI systems with human values while maintaining transparency within the industry.
