PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Six days into the investigation into last weekend’s mass shooting at Brown University, authorities said they are examining a possible connection between that attack and a subsequent incident near Boston that killed a professor at another Ivy League school.

According to sources familiar with the ongoing investigation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, investigators have identified a person of interest and are actively searching for this individual.

The violent episode at Brown resulted in the death of two students and left nine others injured in a classroom within the school's engineering building before the shooter fled the scene.

Similarly, in an incident about 50 miles to the north, MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro was shot in his home on Monday night and succumbed to his injuries in a hospital the following day.

The FBI had previously stated they found no apparent links between the two cases.

Current Status of the Brown Investigation

As the investigation progresses into its second week, there are rising concerns regarding the lack of rapid resolution. Providence's frustration grows as authorities continue their search without any clear images or leads on the shooter's identity.

Attorney General Peter Neronha expressed that there is no discouragement among investigators, asserting that not every case can be swiftly resolved.

Law enforcement has been actively canvassing for evidence and appealing to the public for any security or phone footage from the event's timeframe. The idea is that the perpetrator may have surveilled the area prior to the attack.

They released video footage capturing an individual believed to match the shooter's description. Unfortunately, the footage lacks clarity as the person consistently wears a mask or avoids facing the camera directly.

Despite Brown University having over 1,200 cameras on its campus, the execution of the shooting in an older part of the engineering building, which has limited coverage, complicates the search for evidence.

Providence's Mayor Brett Smiley assured residents that every measure is being undertaken to ensure safety, yet acknowledged the uneasiness felt in the community during this distressing period.

Lessons from Previous Investigations

Experts note that targeted mass shootings typically see the suspect either dying at the scene or evading capture promptly. Historical context demonstrates that while some investigations find resolution quickly, others, like the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, can take several days.

Investigators described the suspect as tall and stocky, with motives still undisclosed, complicating the path toward resolution.
