Russian forces launch drone and missile attack on Kyiv
Russian forces launched a major drone and missile attack on the Ukrainian capital overnight, killing at least one person and forcing several neighbourhoods to be evacuated.
The strike caused a nine‑storey residential building to collapse, leaving residents trapped under rubble, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Multiple fires erupted across the city, including an ambulance station that left a person critically injured.
In response, Poland activated fighter jets to protect its airspace, issuing a preventive statement that its aircraft would secure airspace around threatened regions. Poland is a NATO member under Article 5, which declares an attack on one member an attack on all.
Polish forces stated, "These actions are of a preventive nature and are aimed at securing and protecting the airspace, especially in areas adjacent to the threatened regions."
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cut short a visit to Dublin after intelligence suggested that Moscow was preparing a large-scale strike on Kyiv.
At least 11 people were reported injured, down from an initial count of six. Kyiv is experiencing its first major attack in more than two weeks.
Images captured firefighters dousing flames in an apartment bloc hit by the airstrikes, and traces of fire from air defence systems were seen lighting up the night sky.
