Knicks Victory Turns Violent: Teen Shot, Buses Torched in Manhattan
On Saturday night the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94–90 in game five to end a 53‑year title drought. The win ignited jubilant crowds across Manhattan, but the celebrations soon turned chaotic.
By early Sunday morning, gunfire rang near Times Square, and a 17‑year‑old was shot in the foot. The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported the victim was transported in an NYPD vehicle because ambulance access was blocked by crowds.
The unrest also saw five school buses that had ferried World Cup fans be set on fire or destroyed by bat‑attacks. Officers were forced to climb on top of buses and take protective shots as crowds threw bottles and cones at them. Police injuries followed, with ten officers wounded, including one punched in the face and another struck with a bottle.
The NYPD seized a firearm from the scene, arrested 63 people, and charged many with assault, weapons possession, disorderly conduct, and obstruction of justice.
Despite the violence, plans for a city‑wide parade and mayoral ceremony on Thursday continue, as the city seeks to celebrate the historic win while also addressing the violent backlash.
