PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Police have intensified their search for the shooter who tragically killed two Brown University students and injured nine others on campus, a day after releasing a person of interest in what has become a complex investigation.

Authorities held a news conference on Monday to express their commitment to finding the gunman, emphasizing the gravity of the situation with State Attorney General Peter Neronha stating, “We have a murderer out there.” The shooting took place during the last days of final exams, creating chaos on campus as students were pushed into lockdown.

Search Renewed After Person of Interest Released

The investigation shifted dramatically when authorities announced the release of a man who had previously been detained. This revelation raised significant questions regarding the ongoing efforts to locate the shooter, including the lack of video evidence from the engineering building where the attack occurred. Over 40 rounds were reportedly fired using a 9 mm handgun.

Casualties and Wounded Students

Of the nine students injured, one was released from the hospital, while the remaining seven remain in critical but stable condition. One student is fighting for their life, highlighting the urgent need for answers from law enforcement.

New Efforts to Find the Shooter

Without a clear suspect, police have pledged to redouble their efforts to gather video surveillance from surrounding areas that may aid in identifying the attacker. Mayor Jorge Elorza reassured the public that there had been no credible threats of further violence.

A Grieving Community

The community came together on Sunday evening to honor the victims, turning a scheduled holiday lighting event into a tribute for those lost in the shooting tragedy. Classes and exams have been canceled for the remainder of the semester, allowing students to grieve and seek support during this traumatic time.

Brown University, known for its prestigious academic status, has been undeniably shaken by this violence, prompting discussions about campus safety and preventive measures for future incidents. The school continues to prioritize student welfare and psychological support throughout this difficult period.
