CHICAGO – A recent incident at a Chicago day care has amplified discussions surrounding immigration enforcement, as employee Diana Santillana Galeano was detained by immigration agents while children were being dropped off at the Rayito de Sol Spanish Immersion Early Learning Center.

This encounter was caught on video, showing officers in contact with Santillana Galeano during the early hours of November 5. On Wednesday night, her attorney confirmed her release from a detention center. We are thrilled that Ms. Santillana was released, and has been able to return home to Chicago where she belongs, said attorney Charlie Wysong.

Despite her difficulties, Santillana expressed profound gratitude for her community's support during her time in detention. I am so grateful to everyone who has advocated on my behalf, and on behalf of the countless others who have experienced similar trauma over recent months in the Chicago area, she stated.

The incident reflects the mounting scrutiny regarding immigration policies under the Trump administration, demonstrating aggressive enforcement tactics in Chicago, particularly as part of 'Operation Midway Blitz.' In recent months, more than 3,000 arrests in the area have been reported. Santillana's circumstances are emblematic of broader issues addressed within the community.

The Department of Homeland Security reported that Santillana became a U.S. resident illegally in June 2023 but acquired working privileges under the Biden administration. They clarified that the day care was not specifically targeted. The community continues to rally for her and others facing similar risks.
