HOUSTON — As the annual hurricane season approaches, experts stress the necessity of proactive preparation for storms. The consequences of hurricanes, including strong winds and heavy rainfall, can result in significant destruction and extended power outages.
Brian Mason, director of Houston’s Office of Emergency Management, recommends that families take preparedness measures seriously. Do not be complacent; take preparedness seriously to ensure safety for you and your loved ones during emergencies, Mason stated.
Securing the Home
To minimize threats during a storm, homeowners should secure items in their backyards and board up windows to prevent damage from debris. Shawn Schulze, regional CEO for the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast, urges that all loose items be secured well in advance of a hurricane’s arrival.
Creating an Emergency Kit
Families should assemble an emergency kit with essential supplies, including water, nonperishable food, power banks, medication, and crucial documents stored in waterproof cases. Each person should have a gallon of water daily for at least seven days, and families should also account for their pets in emergency preparations.
Having an Evacuation Plan
In addition to preparing a home, families should have a clear evacuation plan and know their routes. Mason highlights the importance of identifying primary and secondary routes in case of congestion during an emergency.
Preparedness can pave the way for smoother evacuations and less anxiety during storm threats. Thinking through the worst-case scenarios leaves you better equipped to face whatever comes your way, Schulze advises.
