Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in the Western Hemisphere, began spewing lava and ash on Monday. The pyroclastic currents have kept flowing down the south‑eastern slope into early Tuesday, according to the national geological agency. Conred, the disaster‑management agency, issued a nationwide orange alert—the second highest tier—warning locals that further flows and ash clouds could arise.
Conred urged people to keep windows and doors closed and schools in nearby areas cancelled lessons. The volcano sits 16 km (10 miles) west of the tourist‑popular city of Antigua, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hikers also frequent the active stratovolcano.
Conred warned visitors and locals alike to stay away from the slopes and risk zones. The 2018 eruption of Fuego killed more than 200 people, many caught in rapid pyroclastic flows that raced down the Las Lajas ravine.
