In brief

The IMF cautioned that a widespread trade war could result in a significant contraction in global GDP, equating to the combined economies of France and Germany. As trade rhetoric escalates amid potential policy changes in the U.S., the IMF stresses the urgency for governments to bolster their economic defenses.

In a recent interview with the BBC, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) emphasized the dire ramifications that could ensue from a global trade war between major economies, warning that the world economy could shrink significantly—by as much as the aggregate size of the French and German economies. The urgency of this warning has intensified amid ongoing discussions about the re-election campaign of former President Donald Trump, who has expressed intentions to impose a universal tariff of up to 20% on all imports into the United States. The European Union has already signaled plans for retaliatory measures should these tariffs be implemented.Trump has previously touted the term "tariff" as “the most beautiful word in the dictionary,” prompting global markets and finance ministers to increasingly consider the real implications of his proposals. IMF Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath articulated that while the specifics of Trump's trade strategies remain uncertain, the Institute apprehensively anticipates that if severe decoupling and widespread tariffs are enacted, the repercussions could lead to a decrease in world GDP by nearly 7%. This drastic figure bears significant weight—essentially reflecting a loss equivalent to both the French and German economies combined. Gopinath highlighted that tariffs amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars would represent a fundamental shift from the economic stability experienced in recent decades. Moreover, the IMF underscored concerns about escalating levels of global government debt, urging nations to seize the current period of steady growth as an opportunity to strengthen their fiscal resilience. Gopinath stated, "This will not be the last crisis. There will be additional shocks," emphasizing the necessity for countries to create fiscal space to respond effectively in the future.Despite the looming threats, Gopinath also pointed out the global economy's resilient recovery from multiple crises, stating, “Past experiences with bringing down inflation have not been with a soft landing.” She credited central banks for achieving a decrease in inflation alongside low unemployment rates, though she cautioned that reinforcing economic resilience in this fragile landscape is critical moving forward.
