Charges stem from incidents over two decades ago amid rising U.S.-China tensions

In brief

David Lee, a U.S. citizen, sentenced to five years in a case critics say shows China's inconsistent legal practices

A Chinese-born American businessman, David Lee, was recently sentenced to five years in prison in China. His charges relate to a criminal case dating back nearly 25 years. Despite frequent travels to China in the interim, Mr. Lee's family and human rights advocates argue that his case highlights the arbitrary nature of law enforcement in the country. They are appealing for his release on humanitarian grounds, citing Mr. Lee's recent hospitalization and concerns over his health after suffering a stroke. Mr. Lee, 61, was found guilty on April 23 of intentional injury and the vague charge of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble," typically levied against those seen as undermining social order. The verdict cited his involvement in three altercations from 2000 to 2001, one of which allegedly resulted in a fatality. However, his family contends that his involvement was minimal, claiming he was initially detained briefly and later released without charges, thereby considering the case resolved. For the last two decades, Mr. Lee, who became a U.S. citizen in 2002, frequented China as a wholesale lighting supplier for major retailers, making regular trips without incident. His wife, Louise Lin, asserts that if Mr. Lee felt threatened by legal repercussions, he would have refrained from returning to China. The timing of Lee's sentencing is noteworthy, coinciding with escalating tensions between the United States and China during a period of heightened trade disputes. While officials have not indicated a direct connection between these tensions and Mr. Lee’s case, it nonetheless introduces a potential strain in international relations.
