The community in West Virginia came together this weekend to pay tribute to U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, a National Guard member fatally shot last week in Washington, D.C. Mourners filled the bleachers and folding chairs at Webster County High School, where Beckstrom attended, lighting candles and sharing stories of her kindness and dedication.
Principal Jarrod Hankins described Beckstrom as a student who exuded positivity, saying, 'She was sweet, caring, and always willing to help others.' Beckstrom, who graduated in June 2023, served with distinction as a military police officer.
During the vigil, Governor Patrick Morrisey expressed his condolences and support, highlighting Beckstrom's reputation as a beloved figure in the community. He also provided updates on Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, who was shot alongside Beckstrom and remains hospitalized in critical condition. Morrisey noted the importance of coming together during such challenging times.
Wolfe, who joined the service in February 2019, continues to fight for his life as community members rally around both families in solidarity. As they mourn the loss of Beckstrom, the community reflects on her legacy, characterized by compassion and service to others.
