BTS Lights Up Seoul with Triumphant Comeback Concert
Fans poured into the historic heart of South Korea's capital for the return of the world's most successful band in recent years, BTS.
According to entertainment company HYBE, about 104,000 people attended the concert on March 21, 2026, at Gwanghwamun Square, where the seven K-pop stars - RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook - performed together for the first time since October 2022.
Set against the backdrop of a 14th Century gateway to the royal palace, the band's one-hour set included songs from their long-awaited new album, Arirang, which was released shortly before the concert.
The stage resembled a triumphal arch, a rare honor paid to the seven idols, symbolizing their status as cultural ambassadors of South Korean success.
As BTS re-enter the music scene, they are set to begin a world tour next month, which is projected to generate $1 billion in revenue, reflecting their significant economic impact beyond just profitability.
Entering Gwanghwamun square felt like stepping into a dedicated temple for the boyband, transformed with colors synonymous with BTS, purple.
While the concert was a monumental occasion for fans, attendance was limited as only 22,000 of the attendees had free tickets to the cordoned-off area. The remaining fans watched from outside on massive screens.
Despite the excitement, the concert forced many local residents and events to navigate through disruptions due to the crowds. The government took various security measures, including the deployment of 7,000 police officers to ensure safety.
In anticipation, hotels and businesses around the area fully booked well in advance, demonstrating BTS's significant influence on tourism and local economies.
The new album Arirang, named after the famous Korean folk song, symbolizes hope and resilience and has already achieved remarkable initial sales.
The public reaction to the concert remains mixed, as some locals express concerns about the disruptions caused by the major event, while fans celebrate the band's return to the stage.
