Aung San Suu Kyi Appears Healthy After 2½ Years of Isolation

Former Myanmar president Aung San Suu Kyi has been allowed to meet a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the first confirmed outside contact for the 81‑year‑old democracy icon in 2½ years. The photographs released by the military government show Suu Kyi looking relaxed and well, suggesting she is in good health, though no medical details have been provided.

Suu Kyi was detained shortly after the armed forces overthrew her government in 2021 and was sentenced to 33 years on widely disputed charges. Her sentence has since been reduced and she was moved to house arrest. The military has promised she is alive and well, but no reliable evidence has been supplied until now.

Her son, Kim Aris, has led an international campaign demanding proof of life for his mother and has finally welcomed the ICRC‑led visit. He said the pictures appear real and that his mother seemed to be in "good health."

ICRC report: "The visit was carried out in accordance with the ICRC's standards and procedures for visiting people deprived of liberty. This included the opportunity to speak with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in private." The meeting indicates the Myanmar military may be open to at least one of the demands that have been pressed upon them, including releasing Suu Kyi.

Behind the photos, the Myanmar government continues diplomatic outreach, hoping to reduce its isolation. They have yet to agree to stop aerial bombardments or negotiate to end the civil war, but the release of Suu Kyi’s image could signal a shift in the regime’s international posture.
