A US congressional committee has formally summoned Attorney General Pam Bondi, demanding that she answer questions over her handling of the investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer, wrote in the subpoena letter that his committee is investigating the possible mismanagement of the investigation. This action follows weeks after Republican lawmaker Nancy Mace introduced a motion to subpoena Bondi, alleging that the justice department was involved in a cover-up regarding the Epstein files. A spokesperson for the justice department described the subpoena as completely unnecessary. In the wake of this ongoing scrutiny, Bondi and the Trump administration are facing increasing pressure from across the political spectrum to disclose all documents related to the probe. Comer’s letter also highlighted questions regarding the Department of Justice's compliance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Critics have pointed out shortcomings in the department's handling of the files, particularly the failure to adequately redact the names of Epstein's victims. Bondi has been asked to appear before Congress on April 14. Last November, Trump signed legislation mandating the justice department to release all information concerning its investigations into Epstein; however, significant criticism has arisen from lawmakers regarding the agency's redaction policies. The justice department countered claims of mishandling of files, insisting they continue to provide policymakers with relevant facts and have offered lawmakers the opportunity to view unredacted files directly. Should Bondi comply with the subpoena, she would join a notable lineup of individuals, including former President Bill Clinton, who have previously testified before the House Oversight Committee.
