In brief

Yahaya Masussuka, a fiery Islamic preacher in Nigeria, was shot dead outside his home in Katsina state. The attack followed his criticism of traditional Hadith beliefs and his outspoken stance against extremist groups. Both he and a visiting guest were killed by two armed men on a motorcycle. The killing adds to a longstanding trend of violence against religious figures in northern Nigeria.

The killing of Yahaya Masussuka, a controversial Nigerian Islamic cleric, sparked renewed concerns about religious tensions in northern Nigeria.

Masussuka was shot by two armed men on a motorcycle outside his home in Dutsin‑Ma, Katsina state, Monday evening, while he was greeting visitors. He and one of his guests died in the hospital shortly after the attack.

The cleric had attracted hate messages online for denying traditional Hadith beliefs that the dead are questioned in the grave, a stance that put him at odds with many orthodox scholars. While the motive remains unclear, his death follows a pattern of violence against outspoken preachers in the region.

Masussuka, who studied at Al‑Azhar in Cairo and later in Oman, had a history of public dissent—he once spent nine months in jail for mocking Islamic scholars. In recognition of his advocacy for interfaith dialogue, Nigeria’s Network for Good Governance and Transparency awarded him a peace ambassador title last year.

The killing adds to the list of at least six high‑profile Muslim leaders assassinated over the past twenty years, many of whom were targeted by Boko Haram for criticizing the extremist group’s tactics. The incident underscores the volatile mix of religious, ethnic, and political conflict in Nigeria’s north.
