Rescuers say at least 20 people have been injured in southern Israel after the Israeli military reported that a drone was launched from Yemen.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the drone struck the resort town of Eilat on the Red Sea coast, despite attempts to intercept it.
The Magen David Adom emergency medical service confirmed that 20 individuals, including two men with serious limb injuries, were transported to Yoseftal Hospital.
The Iranian-backed Houthis claimed responsibility for the strike following the incident.
A spokesman for the group, Yahya Sarea, indicated that two drones targeted two “Israeli enemy targets” in what they deemed a “successful” operation.
Live footage of the drone strike broadcasted by Israeli TV and verified social media footage captured smoke billowing from the site of impact.
In response, the IDF deployed troops alongside the Israel Police to assist with evacuations and dispatched a helicopter to take the wounded from the scene.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz commented on the incident, expressing hopes for the swift recovery of those injured and warning about the consequences of actions taken against Israel.
The attack is considered one of the most serious launched by the Houthis in terms of casualties, highlighting the ongoing conflict dynamics between the groups.
In previous instances, Eilat has been targeted, with reports of drone attacks in the area surfacing in recent weeks. With increasing tensions and military activities, this incident sheds light on the complexities of the ongoing geopolitical strife in the region.
