In brief

A unique culinary initiative enhances morale as the war continues, demonstrating resilience and creativity in the face of adversity.

In a makeshift kitchen located within a military base in the Kharkiv region, Pvt. Yaroslav Breus dedicates his time to preparing nutritious meals for Ukrainian soldiers engaged in a fight for their homeland. Once celebrated for his culinary skills on the Ukrainian version of "MasterChef," Breus has exchanged his chef's hat for military fatigues since the onset of Russia's invasion in 2022. Recently, a Russian strike damaged the kitchen facilities, but the troops quickly repaired what they could to resume cooking. "This may very well be the last meal we prepare under these conditions," Breus reflected as he cooked a feast of pork steaks, beetroot salad garnished with walnuts, and the ever-popular borscht, showcasing flavors of home even amidst turmoil. The soldiers of the First Assault Battalion of the Third Assault Brigade enjoy relatively good meals, thanks to the passionate efforts of Breus and his team. Cooking with limited resources, they often rely on basic ingredients such as potatoes and pork. The camaraderie in the kitchen is as vital as the food itself, serving as a beacon of support in the face of relentless Russian assaults. As bullets whirl outside, the warmth from the kitchen offers a taste of normalcy and comfort. With every dish prepared, Pvt. Breus hopes to elevate not only the nutritional intake of his fellow soldiers but their spirits as well, showcasing the profound connection between food and morale during these challenging times.
