Donatella Versace Steps Down as Creative Director of Iconic Fashion House

Donatella Versace concludes her nearly 30-year tenure as the creative director of Versace, ushering in a new era for the brand.

In a significant shift for the luxury fashion industry, Donatella Versace has announced her departure from the role of creative director at Versace after nearly three decades, a position she has held since 1997 following the tragic murder of her brother, Gianni Versace. Taking her place will be Dario Vitale, a former design director at Miu Miu. The transition comes amid rumors of interest from the Prada Group in acquiring Versace from Capri Holdings, who had purchased the label for €2 billion in 2018.

Capri Holdings confirmed that the leadership change is part of a "thoughtful succession plan," with Vitale described as a "strong design leader" crucial for the brand's future growth. Donatella will shift her focus towards supporting Versace's philanthropic initiatives and continuing as a global brand ambassador. In an Instagram statement, she expressed pride in honoring her brother's legacy and her ongoing commitment to nurturing emerging talent in fashion, stating, "Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart."

Throughout her career, Donatella has designed for A-listers including Madonna, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga, and is renowned for iconic pieces such as Jennifer Lopez's famous jungle dress. The fashion house, established in Milan in 1978 by Donatella, Gianni, and Santo Versace, has become synonymous with bold designs and vibrant prints, embodying Donatella's distinctive style. Versace currently accounts for 20% of Capri's projected annual revenue of €5.2 billion for 2024.
