GRAND BLANC, Mich. (AP) — Police say one person was killed and nine injured in a shooting at a Mormon church in Michigan, and the suspect is also dead. The shooting occurred on Sunday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, located about 50 miles north of Detroit. Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye reported that the church was also set ablaze. Authorities assured the public that there is no ongoing threat, but details regarding the status of the surviving victims have not been released. The site is surrounded by a parking lot and a large lawn, close to residential areas and another place of worship, a Jehovah's Witness church. Grand Blanc, with a population of around 8,000, lies just outside Flint. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her sorrow for the Grand Blanc community, stating, “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable.” Notably, the shooting took place just a day after the passing of Russell M. Nelson, the oldest president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 101 years old. The next president of the church is expected to be Dallin H. Oaks, according to church protocols.
