In brief

In a successful operation, Australian authorities have reclaimed over 40,000 Bluey coins stolen earlier this year, charging several individuals involved in the theft.

The New South Wales Police Force has announced a substantial development in the case of the stolen limited-edition Bluey coins, recovering approximately 40,061 of these collectible items. The coins, inspired by the popular children's television series Bluey, were pilfered from a warehouse in Western Sydney in July, just months ahead of their anticipated circulation.Authorities acted swiftly following the theft of 63,000 coins, produced by the Australian Mint. A raid was executed on a property about 10 kilometers from the storage facility, leading to the recovery of the coins. On the same day, a 27-year-old woman named Christina Vale was arrested, facing charges of breaking and entering, as well as dealing in stolen property. She is reportedly the third person to be apprehended in association with the crime.Initially reported as stolen two months prior to their release, the coins – valued at A$1 each – had been fetching up to ten times their face value online. New South Wales Police took immediate action, launching an investigation known as Strike Force Bandit, inspired by Bluey’s father, to track down the culprits. The investigation had already resulted in the arrests of Steven Nielsen, a 44-year-old warehouse employee, and his alleged accomplice, Nassar Kanj, also 44, earlier in August. Officials now intend to pursue claims in court that Vale was acting as a getaway driver for the pair during their alleged operation. The coins, dubbed Bluey dollarbucks, showcase characters from the series, which follows the adventures of the Heeler family of dogs. Created by Brisbane’s Ludo Studio in collaboration with the BBC and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Bluey has garnered immense global popularity, airing in over 60 countries. The show recorded over 20 billion streaming minutes on Disney+ in the US last year, ranking among its top 10 programs by viewership.Significant excitement surrounding Bluey continues with the opening of an interactive experience centered around the series planned for next month in Brisbane. Notably, the stolen coins differ from another Bluey-themed currency set that was released by the Royal Australian Mint in June, which created a significant collector's frenzy.
