Hamas Weighs U.S. Cease-Fire Proposal as Gaza Conflict Intensifies
Hamas responds to a U.S. call for a temporary cease-fire amid ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Hamas announced on Saturday that it had provided a response to a U.S. proposed cease-fire that would halt fighting in Gaza for at least two months and facilitate the release of half the remaining hostages. This development comes after numerous weeks of diplomatic efforts by U.S. officials and various mediators seeking a new truce. Israel had previously terminated a two-month cease-fire in March, citing deadlock in truce talks, subsequently renewing attacks on Hamas while imposing a blockade on humanitarian aid entering the territory.
While Hamas did not explicitly state whether it had accepted or rejected the cease-fire conditions, the group did outline its commitment to engaging in negotiations aimed at achieving a permanent cease-fire, the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the resumption of aid flows to the besieged Palestinian population. According to reports, negotiators from Hamas have expressed a willingness to release the remaining hostages held in Gaza in exchange for an immediate end to the hostilities and a full Israeli withdrawal from the area. Israeli authorities estimate that approximately 20 living hostages and the remains of over 30 others are still in Gaza.
The cease-fire initiative was advanced by Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s envoy to the Middle East, emphasizing that the move would help restore a sense of security and stability in the region. As diplomatic efforts continue, the outlook for a resolution remains uncertain with rising tensions and ongoing humanitarian challenges faced by the people of Gaza.
