UN Demands Independent Probe into Gaza Aid Site Killings

The UN Secretary-General has urged for an independent investigation into the recent violent events near an aid distribution center in Gaza that claimed the lives of numerous Palestinians. This follows chaotic scenes reported on Sunday as individuals awaited essential food supplies from the American and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) facility in Rafah.

While local witnesses claim gunfire erupted, resulting in casualties, the Israeli military has firmly denied any targeting of civilians, labeling the reports as misleading. The humanitarian situation is further complicated by existing restrictions on independent journalism in Gaza, which makes confirming events challenging.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his alarm over the situation, stating, “I am appalled by reports of Palestinians killed and injured while seeking aid in Gaza yesterday.” He called for a prompt investigation and accountability for any responsible parties. Conversely, Israel's foreign ministry criticized Guterres’s statement, asserting the necessity of addressing actions taken by Hamas.

The conflicting reports highlight a grim situation; the Red Cross noted that its field hospital had treated 179 individuals, with 21 dead upon arrival. On the other hand, the Hamas-run Civil Defense agency reported 31 fatalities. Medical teams also reported numerous patients with severe injuries, alleging they were targeted while trying to access aid.
