US Airlines Suspend Flights to Haiti Amid Security Crisis

US aviation authorities announce a temporary halt on flights to Haiti due to escalating violence.

In light of recent gun attacks on commercial flights, US aviation regulators have announced a suspension of flights to Haiti for at least 30 days.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has imposed a flight ban affecting US carriers, following a troubling spate of three separate gun attacks on Monday targeting aircraft departing from Haiti's Toussaint Louverture International Airport. Popular airlines such as JetBlue, Spirit, and American Airlines reported incidents where their planes were struck by bullets, though there were no serious injuries to passengers.

As a direct response to these safety concerns, the FAA issued a Notice to Air Missions (Notam) that prohibits US flights from operating within 10,000 feet of Haitian airspace citing "safety-of-flight risks associated with ongoing security instability." The FBI has also joined the investigation into the shooting incident involving Spirit Airlines, indicating that federal law enforcement is taking this matter seriously amid fears for passenger safety.

The violence in Haiti has escalated significantly since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021, leading to increased gang warfare that has claimed more than 3,600 lives this year alone. According to UN reports, over 500,000 residents have been displaced due to this violence. The humanitarian crisis is compounded by rising tensions as gang-related activities have made travel to and from Haiti increasingly perilous.

In a separate statement, the US embassy in Haiti acknowledged the heightened risks and emphasized that the security situation remains "unpredictable and dangerous." The timing of the attacks coincides with the inauguration of a new prime minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, whose administration has pledged to prioritize the restoration of security in the country.

Furthermore, the US State Department has called on Haiti's leadership to focus on governance and address the pressing needs of the Haitian populace, urging officials to set aside personal ambitions for the sake of national stability.
