Tragic Attack on Gaza Headquarters Results in Death of Humanitarian Worker

The Palestine Red Crescent Society reports a deadly assault on its HQ by Israeli forces, highlighting the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society has condemned an Israeli military strike on its headquarters in Khan Younis, which claimed the life of one worker and injured three others. The organization described the attack as intentional, emphasizing the well-marked location of its facility. As the humanitarian crisis deepens, calls for accountability and protection of aid workers grow louder.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has accused Israeli forces of conducting a lethal strike on its headquarters in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the death of one worker and injuries to three others. The humanitarian organization reported that the incident occurred early Sunday morning in Khan Younis, igniting a fire within the facility. Labeling the attack as "deliberate," the PRCS stressed that its headquarters is "well known" to the Israeli military and prominently displayed the protective red emblem symbolizing its humanitarian mission.

In a statement to the BBC, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) indicated that they were examining claims regarding the damage to the PRCS building, asserting it did not intend to harm uninvolved individuals in the area. A video circulating on social media, shared by the PRCS, depicted flames and smoke engulfing parts of the building, with subsequent images revealing severe destruction and large bloodstains.

The PRCS identified the fallen worker as Omar Isleem and expressed deep sorrow over his death. Additionally, two other staff members and a civilian attempting to extinguish the fire sustained injuries. The organization reiterated that their building was clearly marked, insisting, "This was not a mistake," and renewed their call for accountability and protection for all humanitarian and medical personnel.

Since the conflict's onset, the PRCS has reported that 51 of its staff and volunteers in Gaza have lost their lives due to Israeli actions, with 29 casualties occurring while engaged in humanitarian duties. The UN Human Rights office has voiced its "deep shock and outrage" over the continued killings of emergency workers in Gaza, calling for an independent investigation into such incidents.

This tragedy unfolds amid escalating warnings regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry disclosed that Israeli military actions had resulted in at least 104 deaths within the last 24 hours, with 65 of those being civilians seeking assistance.

In a separate incident, the Al-Awda hospital reported casualties among individuals near a US and Israeli-supported aid distribution point, following an encounter with Israeli troops. The IDF, however, stated that warning shots were fired at a gathering posing a threat, and they were unaware of any resulting casualties.

The UN reports that since late May, at least 1,373 Palestinians seeking food have been killed, with the majority of deaths occurring near Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) sites. While the GHF contests the UN's figures, Israel accuses Hamas of inciting unrest nearby.

Additionally, Egyptian state media reported two trucks carrying essential fuel awaiting entry into Gaza, amid persistent warnings from medical personnel about critically low supplies. Although an 11-week blockade has seen some easing, humanitarian groups assert that more aid is needed to prevent famine.

Amid ongoing violence since the IDF's military campaign launched in response to a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry claims that more than 60,000 people have been killed across the Gaza Strip. The escalating situation continues to raise alarm within the international community, fueling calls for immediate action to protect civilians and aid workers alike.
