**Finnish Court Imposes Life Sentence for Russian War Crimes in Ukraine**

A significant legal precedent set as Voislav Torden is held accountable for killings in the Luhansk region.

The ruling marks Finland's first trial and conviction for war crimes linked to the conflict in Ukraine, sending a strong message against impunity.

In a landmark judgment, a Finnish court announced a life sentence for Voislav Torden, a Russian national found guilty of war crimes committed during the 2014 conflict in eastern Ukraine. The court in Helsinki determined that Torden, a senior member of the far-right Rusich paramilitary group, played a crucial role in the ambush that led to the deaths of 22 Ukrainian soldiers.

Torden, 38, previously known as Yan Petrovsky, was convicted on four charges linked to a deadly ambush in the Luhansk region, while the court acquitted him of one allegation. His conviction is particularly notable as it marks the first instance of war crime charges being prosecuted in Finland in relation to events in Ukraine. Torden has consistently denied all allegations against him and is expected to appeal the verdict.

The case revolves around an ambush executed on September 5, 2014, where Torden and his men posed as Ukrainian soldiers while attacking Ukrainian forces and setting their vehicles ablaze. While the court did not find sufficient evidence to assign specific blame for the deaths of 21 soldiers to Rusich as an organization, it determined that Torden was responsible for the death of one soldier and the mutilation of another—actions described as particularly brutal.

The judges wrote that Torden's behavior during the ambush amounted to murder due to its extreme cruelty. His defense attorney expressed bewilderment at the verdict, emphasizing the lack of evidence directly linking Torden to the death he was convicted for.

Torden was apprehended in July 2023 at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport following a request from the Ukrainian government, which sought extradition for him to face charges. However, due to concerns over the fairness of a trial in Ukraine, the Supreme Court of Finland allowed the case to proceed in Helsinki, grounded in international law.

In response to the ruling, Ukraine's prosecutor general characterized the decision as a critical step towards accountability for violations of humanitarian law, emphasizing continued collaboration with international partners to ensure that war criminals face justice.
